BeGas joins the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda to analyze the challenges in terms of sustainable urban mobility

BeGas se une al Ministerio de Transportes, Movilidad y Agenda Urbana para analizar los retos en materia de movilidad urbana sostenible

In commemoration of the “Future Mobility Week”, BeGas has organized the event within the framework of the Open Dialogue of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) to broadcast the new R & D solutions and the keys with which to promote responsible mobility in urban transport.

Nowadays, AutoGas is a solution that gets zero emissions in urban transport. This has been one of the conclusions of the event ‘Public transport and urban cleaning services: challenges and trends in sustainable urban mobility’, organized by the first company to manufacture 100% AutoGas Euro VI-D engines, BeGas, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA), on December 11, because of the occasion of the ‘Mobility Week of the Future’

Not forgetting that of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that the UN established for the 2030 Agenda, the action of this technology-based and research nature company impacts on almost half of this goals: making cities more resilient and sustainable, promoting industrialization in sustainable innovation or guaranteeing sustainable consumption and production methods are some of this improvements.

To persist moving forward in this direction and after having participated in the public consultation for the preparation of the Draft Law on Sustainable Mobility and Transportation Financing; BeGas has released the keys to promoting responsible mobility in urban transport, in the hands of great experts in the sector such as Repsol, UNVI or Urbaser. To get it, it has counted with María García de la Fuente as moderator, president of the Association of Environmental Information Journalists (APIA).

Throughout the time of the meeting, the role of alternative energies in sustainable urban mobility has occupied the predominant part of the debate. Dolores Cárdenas, Repsol Product Design Advisor, highlighted in her speech the importance of maintaining technological neutrality and selecting the most appropriate technology for each use, without ruling out any type of energy that is key in the short-medium term to decarbonize the transport.

In her view, ''it is necessary to establish clear objectives for air quality and decarbonization of transport without excluding technologies that can be part of the solution in the short, medium and long term, that is, maintaining technological neutrality'' since, as he has clarified, ''all energy with a low carbon footprint for mobility, advanced biofuels, synthetic fuels, hydrogen and electricity will be necessary to achieve the objectives of climate neutrality''.

AutoGas is the most universally used alternative fuel in the world, offering the same benefits as traditional fuels and, furthermore, it contributes effectively to improving air quality in cities. The reduction in polluting gas emissions that it achieves, make it an ecological and clean fuel, which provides the transport sector with a ideal solution for fleets of urban buses and cleaning services.

The future of sustainable mobility, as stated by the engineering director of the Industrial Vehicles Unit (UNVI), Eva Legido, requires “promoting the use of public transport, betting on technological progress and selecting the appropriate technology for each application ”. Legido, has pointed out «the importance of the analysis of the ‘well to the wheel’, being AutoGas one of the solutions that she considers that the European Union should take into account», as it is one of the biggest innovations that exist around sustainable urban mobility.

Alfredo Sánchez, responsible for sustainability in the General Directorate of Land Transport of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA), considers that promoting sustainable mobility from institutions is the key. For this reason, ''it is necessary to build a joint strategy among all the actors and carry out different actions to promote change in the medium-long term and thus achieve international objectives and commitments,'' he stated.

Both municipalities, public transport companies and cleaning and care environmental firms, as well as companies in the automotive sector must adapt to the new sustainability requirements: adopting cleaner energies, seeking cost efficiency and developing consumption responsible through innovative solutions.

Technologies, keys to adapt to the new requirements of sustainable urban mobility

Technological and innovative development that is being used to adapt urban vehicles to the new requirements of sustainable urban mobility have also had a noticeable importance in this event organized by BeGas, adopting a triple perspective: environmental sustainability (reduction of emissions), sustainability economic (administrative efficiency) and social (public awareness).

In this sense, Josep Compte Morales, head of machinery at Urbaser, a company specializing in environmental management with activities focused on urban services, has stressed ''the importance of applying the best technology for public transport and urban cleaning services at all times'' . In fact, in his speech he pointed out that AutoGas has a better recharge infrastructure compared to other alternative energies. ''This is very important for us because of the flexibility it allows us, from the point that the installation is much cheaper.''

Moreover, he highlighted the importance of looking through the market to find all the technical elements, apart from the necessity of the public sector being involved in transport R & D projects and also the need to incorporate the most cutting-edge technology through collaborations , like the one they have with BeGas right now. And it is that, “the implementation of AutoGas engines to reduce all possible emissions in extra-urban areas where there are not all the components to achieve clean energy, such as an infrastructure for electric vehicles or natural gas, is essential to reduce emissions”.

Precisely, the new BeGas engines, powered 100% by Euro VI-D liquid injection AutoGas and destined to move urban buses and trucks, with lower CO2 emissions than the most modern diesels, are one of the key solutions to achieve sustainable urban transport.

Pedro Silva, CEO of BeGas, AutoGas believes that “is an accelerating technology because it is an energy that allows cities to have clean vehicles immediately; transformer, because BeGas is the only AutoGas engine manufacturer in Spain, which is committed to reindustrialization and the environment; and transitory because this technology allows in the short term to accomplish with the requirements of the European Union in terms of noise and polluting gases ”, in fact, BeGas AVG engines drastically reduce pollutant emissions, specifically 51% in CO levels, 22% in PN levels, 57% in NOx levels, 29% in PM10 levels and 87% in levels by HC. “That is why we have developed the AVG engine that has achieved Euro VI-D approval.

Technological innovations like this, potentially trigger the actions that can be taken to bet on sustainable urban transport. A challenge, social and governmental, that must be faced by seeking a global solution.

Under this premise, the conclusions of the act will be sent to the Ministry for its consideration in the preparation of the Strategy for Safe, Sustainable and Connected Mobility 2030 and the Draft Law on Sustainable Mobility and Transportation Financing.
