How to get a Smart city without large investments in clean transport

The pandemic has marked a before and after, talking about the way we want our cities to evolve. The objective is that the quality of life in cities does not decrease due to factors such as traffic, noise or pollution. For this reason it is essential to decarbonise the heaviest vehicles, especially public transport or waste collection trucks, since they are responsible for a large part of the polluting emissions into the atmosphere.

One of the existing options is the remotorization of diesel engines that are between 3 and 10 years old by other engines powered by autogas or biopropane, the latter, 100% renewable. Thanks to a ‘made in Spain’ built by BeGas, it is possible to achieve this challenge and get sustainable national cities as benchmarks at a European level.

Malaga, San Sebastián and Bilbao are perfect examples that show a clear growth towards models surveyed focused on smart citiesA broad field that, in addition to introducing new initiatives related to digitization, connectivity and ICT, is also committed to promoting values such as sustainability and environmental care.

This is precisely what BeGasa Spanish company based in Bizkaia and a pioneer in the development of ecological engines, that promote the use and recycling of fleets at a lower costthus contributing to the ecological transition, a key aspect to get smart cities.

And it is that, if we compare the purchase price of a new bus with a engine changed by BeGas, up to five vehicles could be remotorized for the same price. Using this technology we also avoid more than 80,000 kg of waste generation. BeGas engines not only obtain the Eco-DGT label after repower, but also have the latest technology and innovation in this growing area. This commitment to the most avant-garde solutions has been possible thanks to the collaboration of institutions such as the CMT-Motores Térmicos of the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the CDTIwith co-financing from the ERDF Funds.

Innovation at the service of efficiency and gas emission reduction

This kind of engine gains in efficiency, but also meets the latest European emission regulations standards and manages to drastically reduce the emission of polluting gases such as NOx or suspended particles by up to 90%. They also reduce vehicle noise levels by 50%, if we compare it with diesel engines. These values are very favorable, in an attempt to improve air quality in smart cities and to promote sustainable mobility.

In addition to the economical saving and the environmental impact, the local entities that use this service will not have to make major changes in their facilities for the supply of fuel, since the same company facilitates the management of the point of supply for both fuels. An important addition that guarantees an efficient service from the manufacturing process to the start-up of the vehicle.

Unique engines made in Spain

The company, based in Bizkaia, operates the BeGas AVG engine production cell at the Boroa Automotive Intelligence Center (AIC) and integrates them into heavy vehicles at their facilities located in San Agustín de Guadalix (Madrid). To get this strategy, the manufacturer also has a collaboration agreement with the CMT-Motores Térmicos of the Polytechnic University of ValenciaThey are already working together on a small engine that will cover the last mile market.
