Given the current situation, focused on the search for greater economic independence and the objectives of climate neutrality by 2050, the European Parliament has just approved a proposal to promote alternative fuels for use in transport, which includes liquefied petroleum gases (LPG).
In the current time of economic instability, with energy prices at historic highs, and with society increasingly aware of sustainability and respect for and care for the environment, the European Union is working to achieve greater energy independence without losing sight of the objectives of climate neutrality by 2050. In this line, the European Parliament has just approved a new regulation to promote alternative fuels for use in transport, which includes liquefied petroleum gases (LPG). The company BeGas, a pioneer in the development of 100% sustainable engines powered by autogas (LPG) and bioautogas (bioLPG) for heavy urban vehicles, welcomes the commitment to this type of fuel which, although they have been on the market for years, are now positioned as economic and sustainable alternatives to traditional fuels.
In this context, BeGas experts identify the keys that make autogas, the name given to LPG dedicated to the automotive industry, one of the main mobility alternatives in the following years:
- Increase in demand for vehicles powered by autogas (LPG). According to data published by the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC), throughout 2022 the sale of vehicles powered by autogas (LPG) has increased by 19% compared to the previous year. This trend is expected to continue to rise in the coming months, as the main factors that have contributed to this increase (increase in fuel and electricity prices, as well as the rise in sustainable mobility) will continue over time.
- Commitment to re-motorisation of the vehicle fleet. One of BeGas’ star services is the so-called ‘retrofit’ for heavy urban vehicles, which consists of replacing diesel engines between three and ten years old with 100% sustainable ones powered by autogas (LPG). An option that allows public administrations and passenger and freight transport companies, for a moderate investment, to opt for a more economical and environmentally friendly fuel.
- Cost savings. The price of LPG ended the month of September at €1.037/l, a figure considerably lower than the cost of other traditional fuels. In addition, autogas is also included in the €0.20 bonus approved by the Government, so the savings would be even greater.
- Support for sustainable mobility. According to information published by the Ministry for Ecological Transition, the transport sector accounts for 25% of total greenhouse gas emissions in Spain – 95% of which come from roads. Therefore, its decarbonisation is one of the state priorities on the road to net zero emissions. Thus, it is expected that aid for the promotion of sustainable mobility will continue to increase in the following years.
Thus, BeGas engines are positioned as one of the best options for the decarbonisation of cities and urban heavy vehicles, offering public administrations and passenger and freight transport companies a less polluting fuel alternative at an affordable price.
